Bioinformatics comes to North Louisiana - August 23-24, 2004

Dr. Georges Grinstein of the University of Massachusetts Lowell visits on August 23 and 24, 2004.

Dr. Grinstein, Director of the Institute for Visualization and Perception Research and Director of the Center for Biomolecular and Medical Informatics at the University of Massachusetts Lowell, visited numerous CERT institutions on August 23/24, 2004.  Dr. Grinstein serves in a consultant capacity for NLPI, the Consortium for Education, Research & Technology of North Louisiana (CERT), and the CERT Institute for Biomedical Informatics (CIBI), researching the possibility of creating an inter-institutional doctoral bioinformatics curriculum that would be available through the north Louisiana CERT institutions of higher education.

The purpose of Dr. Grinstein's visit was to consult with the CERT institutions in order to determine the strengths and weaknesses of each institution, and the resources available at each institution which could be utilized in the development of the proposed doctoral bioinformatics curriculum.

During his two-day visit, Dr. Grinstein met with faculty and staff at Northwestern State University School of Nursing, Bossier Parish Community College, Grambling State University, Louisiana Tech University, Southern University at Shreveport, and the University of Louisiana at Monroe.  His future plans include visits to other north Louisiana institutions and drafting a concept paper which he will preview to Dr. Paul Sisson and Sheryl Ostendorff prior to his next visit in September or October of this year.
