STARS Team Training - August 24, 2004 Members of the NLPI STARS Teams from each institution gathered at Centenary College to gain a more thorough understanding of the purpose and objectives of NLPI, as well as their role in achieving NLPI's goals.
Dr. Nathan Hutchings, NLPI Co-Principal Investigator from Northwestern State University, gave a PowerPoint presentation which included the following information for the STARS Team members:
- calendar of events
- NLPI communication
- NLPI updates (through E-mail newsletter, currently under development)
- synopsis of major initiatives
- review of NLPI objectives
- STARS Team duties and team participation
- STARS Team incentive program (details forthcoming)
- using NLPI resources to be a proactive team
- STARS Team reporting mechanise (details forthcoming)
Attendees were given information packets related to the training issues addressed.
Dr. Georges Grinstein, Director of the Institute for Visualization and Perception Research and Director of the Center for Biomolecular and Medical Informatics at the University of Massachusetts Lowell, briefly addressed the group. He extended thank-yous to the institutions who had met with him the day before and early that morning. He said the possibility exists to create a doctoral bioinformatics curriculum that is cross-institutional in nature. He said he will draft arguments of the state approving the program, then he will ask the institutions to provide input before the final draft. He will critique the draft, then present it to the CERT Board and finalize the product.
Attendees were given "homework items" to address before the next STARS Team Meeting, set for November 16th:
- Populate the team roster with proactive diverse personalities.
- Design a strategy to introduce the STARS Team to local and regional contacts (within each institution and to local/area businesses).
- Consider how the STARS Team should be represented on the NLPI website (each institution's portion of the webpage).
- Consider how the STARS Team can (specifically) use the incentive money to build relationships for the university within the spirit of the NLPI project.
